I’m writing this on the morning after a hard-fought win by the Green Bay Packers over the San Francisco 49ers. I was cheering right along with the crowd at Lambeau, (yes, I was also checking my phone for the Brewers score). I watched as seasoned veterans and rookie players each contributed their effort and skill. I could also see how the crowd was an active player in the game, an important defensive line fighting to lift the team’s spirit. Despite the warmth of my home and the comfort of my recliner, I was jealous of a friend who was sitting on one of Lambeau’s cold, hard, bleachers. I wanted to be there. I wanted to know my cheers were being heard, that I was contributing to the win.
It’s no different here at E&R Church. We, too, are engaged in a battle, not a sporting contest or a military conquest, not flesh and blood, but a battle of the spirit. We’re in a struggle:
to help our children and youth build a foundation of faith to support them throughout their lives, to help adults nurture their faith so that it matures with them, informs their choices, and inspires them to action, and to care for our elders, even as faith becomes sight in the life to come.
We’re not in this only for ourselves. We share our faith with others, in word and deed. We strive to be a welcoming place that builds God’s beloved community, on earth as it is in heaven. We’re most successful when we’re working together.
There is a way you can make a difference in our ministry. Will you join us for worship?
Some of us are here most Sundays. Thanks be to God! Others, less frequently. We’d love to have you here every week. We also know that you are busy and are not always able to do so. There are two Sundays that I am asking you to make a special effort to be here. They are:
All Saints Celebration: Sunday, November 4 at 9 AM will be a joy-filled time of worship, presenting Bibles to our third-graders, dedicating our rebuilt stained glass windows from the old building, marking the completion of our Stewardship Campaign with the dedication of our pledges, remembering those who have gone before us into the Church Triumphant, celebrating the presence of God with us in Holy Communion, and all the while, swinging with a Dixieland Jazz band, the Windy Hill Wizards. Whether you worship with us often or rarely, you won’t want to miss this!
Bring Your One: Sunday, December 9th at 9 am. Do you know that over 80% of people started attending worship because someone invited them? Further, if you invite someone, four out of ten people will say yes, and another four out of ten may say yes. Will you invite a friend, family member, neighbor, or associate to join you at worship? Begin praying now about whom God is leading you to invite. Pray for that person’s receptivity to your invite. Pray for the courage to ask. Then, invite that person to join you. Bring your “one” to worship on December 9th.
I’m asking you to take your place, on the field, the sidelines, or in the bleachers, and do your part in the work of the church. I’m inviting you to nurture your faith and this community. Facing the rising sun of each new day begun, will you be with us as we march on until victory is won?
