United Church of Christ • June 21-25, 2019
Don’t Miss This Opportunity
I strongly encourage every member, or friend, of our congregation to participate however you can, in General Synod, June 21-25. You will probably never have a better opportunity to participate in a Synod this close to home. GS2019 is
- JOY – rejoice and celebrate God’s love for us
- LOVE – connect or reconnect with members, clergy, delegates and friends
- PROGRESS – share your voice to help shape our church’s future
- WITNESS – unite with others in faithful witness
- INSPIRING – worship, speakers, and ideas
- ENTERTAINING – enjoy the music, outdoor festival, and more
If you’d like to know more about General Synod, there are several videos on YouTube. Among them is a wrap up video from our last Synod in 2017 at Baltimore, MD, click here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lck268csbk8 or search General Synod 2017 Highlights Video.
If you can’t do anything else, join over 4,000 others for worship at the Wisconsin Center on Sunday afternoon, June 23. There will be a choir of 100 of the best singers from across the UCC. Our preacher will be the Rev. Traci Blackmon, Associate General Minister of the UCC. Then stick around for the street festival afterword. Mary Ann Proffitt has organized a Family Fun Event to coordinate carpooling, see her article on page 5.
Join us to assist, guide, inform and provide an extravagant welcome to our guests from across the UCC. There is a spot just right for you. Sign-up is easy and there are many ways to participate.
Among the volunteer options, the greatest need is for ushers during worship on Sunday afternoon. If you’re participating in the Family Fun Event, would you consider being an usher during that worship? You need only register to volunteer and schedule your time as a Sunday usher. There is no fee for this registration and it’s an easy way to help.
All the information you need, including a list of volunteer options, is on the WI Conference website – www.wcucc.org/synodvolunteer. After registering online you’ll receive an email with a link so you can create your volunteer schedule. Schedule six hours and you’ll receive the code to register for Synod at $60. You must register for Synod before June 9th.
So far, we have 8 people who are registered volunteers. They are Gary Giese, Ron Knutson, Joe and Toni Perez, Brian Van Buren and three from my family, (Mary, and I, along with Daniel, Sarah will be serving as a voting delegate to General Synod and is singing in Sunday’s choir at worship.) Currently we’re tied for 10th place for the total number of volunteers from across the Wisconsin Conference. I know we can do better. Will you volunteer?
Be a part of the UCC’s All Church Read. The book is Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City, by Matthew Desmond. Desmond is the keynote speaker at Synod on Saturday. This landmark work, read by our book study group last year, takes us to the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of eight families on the edge. The book will transform our understanding of eviction as a root cause of poverty.
UCC congregations throughout the country have been encouraged to organize book discussion groups around Evicted. A study guide is available at www.wcucc.org/allchurchread.
While the cost of registration for General Synod is considerably more, the fee for Wisconsin General Synod volunteers is just $60. Hotel, Airport, or Intermodal Greeters, or Sunday Worship Ushers must register to volunteer but do not need to register for Synod and, therefore, no fee to volunteer.
If you’d like to know more, please contact me or my wife, Mary. We’re happy to talk with you about your part in General Synod 2019.
